No Data, No Analysis: When a Sports Report Contains Only N/A

If there is no ball, a match cannot take place. If there is no data, a football analysis cannot be written. I received a report called Stage-Two Analysis, divided into nine sections, but every single section returned the same short answer: N/A. There was no player, no club, no score, no tactical context and no credible source. Some might call that a broken document. I call it an honest one. A blank report is a refusal to invent. In modern sports media, that refusal is rare. The pressure to publish quickly, to fill space and to sound confident is enormous. Yet the only way to protect readers is to admit when we do not know. Football fans are intelligent; they recognise empty sentences. A long article built on nothing is worse than a short note that says: no information is available. I have made mistakes on live television, including mispronouncing a player's name. The important lesson was not to hide the mistake but to correct it publicly. Sports journalism is built on trust, and trust begins with honesty. This report teaches us that saying nothing, clearly and openly, is sometimes the most professional thing a writer can do.
